More Americans report shoplifting as inflation climbs, survey finds

A recent survey from LendingTree indicates that thirty percent of Americans admitted to shoplifting in 2026. This is an increase from the twenty-four percent reported in 2024. The study points to rising inflation and financial pressure as primary motivators for this trend, with ninety percent of participants citing economic conditions and affordability concerns as their main reasons for these actions.

Data shows that most individuals are targeting everyday essentials rather than luxury goods. Food and nonalcoholic drinks remain the most common items taken, followed by clothing and personal hygiene products. Technology, toys, and school supplies were also mentioned by respondents.

Retailers with high foot traffic and self-checkout lanes appear to be targeted more frequently. Walmart was identified by forty-seven percent of respondents as the easiest place to shoplift, followed by Family Dollar, Amazon Fresh, and Kroger. Industry analysts suggest the scale and layout of these large chain stores provide more anonymity for those attempting to bypass point-of-sale systems.

Experts warn that the immediate relief of obtaining household goods through theft comes with significant long-term risks. Getting caught can result in legal fees, fines, and permanent records that jeopardize future employment or housing opportunities. The survey results underscore the severity of the current financial climate for many households struggling to maintain basic living standards during this period of economic volatility.
