Opera icons or birds? ECB invites Europeans to pick new euro banknotes

The European Central Bank is preparing for a design change to euro banknotes and wants the public to choose the new look. President Christine Lagarde recently unveiled ten finalist themes for the next generation of currency. These options result from over 1,200 initial proposals examined to better reflect European identity.

There are two distinct paths for the new designs. The first focuses on European culture and features influential historical figures. This selection includes composer Ludwig van Beethoven, soprano Maria Callas, scientist Marie Curie, writer Miguel de Cervantes, artist Leonardo da Vinci, and Bertha von Suttner. These figures represent the artistic, scientific, and literary history of the continent.

The second theme highlights nature and biodiversity. These designs pair specific European bird species with major institutions of the European Union. Included in this list are the kingfisher, the white stork, and the wallcreeper. This approach emphasizes the shared natural landscape and the environment that connects all member states.

Interested citizens can now view these ten designs and cast their votes through the official European Central Bank website. This public consultation marks a significant phase in the bank's plan to modernize the currency. Following the conclusion of the vote, the ECB will move into the technical production phase.

The new banknotes are slated to enter circulation beginning in late 2026. This redesign aims to keep the currency modern while maintaining strong ties to the cultural and natural heritage shared across the region.
