Kofi Asante, Who Is Making History As The First Black Founder Of A Nuclear Company, Raises $10M In Oversubscribed Funding Round
Kofi Asante is making significant waves in the energy sector as the first Black founder of a nuclear company. His startup, Bluecore Energy, recently closed a $10 million oversubscribed funding round to advance his vision for mobile, clean power solutions. The company operates out of the Port of Long Beach, focusing on small, modular, water-cooled nuclear reactors.
These reactors are designed for deployment on floating barges. This setup allows Bluecore Energy to deliver carbon-free power directly to cargo ships, ports, and critical infrastructure. The goal is to provide rapid access to electricity where traditional grid construction would take years to complete.
Asante brings deep operational experience to this venture. His background includes time at Uber, where he contributed to freight strategy, and roles at aerospace firm Elroy Air and maritime company Arc. He also served as a venture partner, which gave him insight into both sides of the fundraising process. This experience helped him assemble a team featuring engineers from SpaceX and Toyota, alongside veteran nuclear experts.
Investors for the round include Slauson & Co., Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen, and Hartbeat Ventures, among several others. Asante intentionally sought support from Black-led and Black-owned firms to ensure his growth strategy keeps representation at the core of the business. The company has already secured a test pressure vessel and successfully delivered its first electric test reactor to its California headquarters.
Asante frames his mission around both practical utility and community impact. By providing reliable, zero-emission energy, he aims to improve air quality and provide sustainable infrastructure for communities near major shipping hubs. The company is now moving forward with its goal of providing power as quickly as modern logistical demands require.
