British maritime defense startup Kraken Technology Group has reached unicorn status after closing a 175 million dollar Series B funding round. This valuation places the Fareham-based firm among the most significant players in the European defense sector.

The investment round saw participation from a group including Digital Transformation Capital Partners, the NATO Innovation Fund, the British Business Bank, and Rheinmetall. This capital infusion is earmarked for the mass production of uncrewed surface and subsurface vessels, as well as the expansion of manufacturing facilities globally.

Founded by former powerboat racer Mal Crease, Kraken builds modular vessels like the K3 SCOUT and the K5 KRAKEN gunship. The company currently supports operations for the UK Ministry of Defence, NATO, and USSOCOM. Its growth reflects a wider industry pivot toward smaller, high-speed, and autonomous maritime platforms in contested waters.

While US competitors like Saronic operate their own shipyards, Kraken relies on strategic partnerships with established manufacturers such as Davie Shipbuilding and Anduril Industries. The firm intends to increase its footprint in the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific regions following this financial milestone. Industry analysts view this development as a clear signal of the rising importance of specialized autonomous technology in naval strategy.
