Leadership at The Venture Arcade

Lara Hodgson has taken the helm as the inaugural executive director of The Venture Arcade, a startup accelerator located at the Georgia Institute of Technology. This appointment marks a significant shift in how the university supports companies that are emerging from its various internal pipelines. Hodgson will oversee operations designed to move ventures from early-stage status toward long-term market viability.

Her background includes two decades of experience in capital markets and executive leadership. Most recently, she served as CEO of RoxWrite, where she managed an underwriting and risk-monitoring platform. Before that role, she led the business-to-business payments firm Now Corp for 14 years. These professional experiences give her a practical understanding of the hurdles faced by founders during the scaling phase.

The Strategic Role of the Accelerator

The Venture Arcade occupies a specific position within the Georgia Tech ecosystem. It acts as a middle step for founders who have already completed programs such as CREATE-X or Biolocity. By providing a dedicated space for businesses to mature, the organization serves as a feeder for later-stage accelerators like the Advanced Technology Development Center and Engage. This structure ensures that startups have a consistent path to scale as they grow their operations.

Located in the Biltmore Innovation Center, the facility provides access to mentorship and funding opportunities. The goal is to assist startups in securing the capital and commercial support required to transition from research-based projects to full-scale enterprises. The program receives backing from the Georgia Tech Foundation and Georgia Advanced Technology Ventures, providing a stable foundation for its initial cohorts.

Future Impact on the Atlanta Tech Ecosystem

Hodgson intends to use her position to increase the visibility of local startups. During her appointment, she stated, "As a Georgia Tech graduate, serial entrepreneur, and longtime mentor to founders at CREATE-X and Harvard Business School, I've seen what it takes to start and scale a business, and I've seen how much faster and more successful that journey can be with the right resources." She believes this model provides an advantage for firms focusing on hard tech and deep tech.

Her academic credentials include a degree in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Beyond her executive work, she has authored the book Level Up, which examines the barriers that prevent small companies from expanding. This combination of academic theory and real-world experience aligns with the university's push to solidify Atlanta as a top-tier technology hub.

Long-Term Goals for Georgia Tech

Raghupathy Sivakumar, who serves as the chief commercialization officer at Georgia Tech, noted that Hodgson’s expertise in capital formation is necessary for the success of this new initiative. The university has made it clear that it views The Venture Arcade as a critical component in its mission to commercialize research. By focusing on the middle phase of startup development, the school aims to keep high-potential talent within its orbit.

Looking ahead, the success of The Venture Arcade will depend on the ability of these startups to land their first major rounds of funding. Hodgson’s network and her history of board service are intended to provide the necessary connections for founders. As she integrates into the campus leadership team, the focus will remain on refining the accelerator's programming to meet the evolving needs of the Atlanta technology community.
