National Innovation Quarter gets state funding to launch Alexandria tech lab

A new technology hub is coming to Alexandria following a significant investment from the state. The National Innovation Quarter has secured $3.93 million in grants through the Go Virginia program to jumpstart operations. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between regional research capacity and the commercial market by providing a space for entrepreneurs to test and scale their concepts.

The project includes an $800,000 allocation to establish a dedicated innovation lab in the Potomac Yard neighborhood. This facility is a collaborative effort involving the City of Alexandria, Arlington County, and Virginia Tech. The lab will focus on turning technical breakthroughs into viable businesses, providing resources that are often difficult for startups to secure on their own.

Local support is a core component of this development. The City of Alexandria committed $200,000 in its current budget to match the state grants, with plans to request an identical amount in the next cycle. This funding structure ensures that the lab has the necessary runway to operate over the next two years.

The National Innovation Quarter acts as a central point for connecting industry leaders, academic institutions, and government partners. Beyond the physical lab in Alexandria, the organization is running multiple business accelerator programs and has opened a larger hub in Crystal City. Founding partners supporting this expansion include major firms such as Amazon, Northrop Grumman, and SAIC, alongside local economic development groups.
