New York Nonprofit Launches Two Venture Funds in Northwest Arkansas

Renaissance Philanthropy is establishing the Northwest Arkansas Innovation Fund to support regional economic growth. Led by Michael Basch, this project focuses on startups and local talent through two primary programs.

The first program, Catalyze479, addresses the capital gap for early-stage companies. It provides funding for high-risk startups and scalable local businesses like neighborhood anchors. The goal is to build a portfolio of companies that eventually secure outside venture capital or angel investment. All returns from these investments go back into the fund to keep the cycle going.

The second initiative is Launch479. This fellowship program focuses on people rather than individual companies. It brings in entrepreneurs and engineers to develop their skills and build new ventures in partnership with the Tulsa-based venture studio Gitwit. By investing in human capital, the program aims to create a self-sustaining environment for business development in Northwest Arkansas.

The Walton Family Foundation supports these efforts to strengthen the local entrepreneurial ecosystem. With initial checks up to $500,000, these funds provide a foundation for founders who are often overlooked by traditional venture capital firms. By combining validation-stage investment with professional fellowship, the initiative targets long-term regional development.
