Meet Palash Soni, IIT and Harvard graduate who sold his startup for $300 million | Hindustan Times
Palash Soni, an IIT and Harvard graduate, recently shared his perspective on building and selling his B2B video startup, Goldcast, for $300 million. The company, which he co-founded in 2020, was acquired by the Blackstone-backed firm Cvent in December 2025. Soni described the journey as one characterized by intense pressure, specifically noting the struggle to secure funding despite the eventual market success of his platform.
During a conversation with creator Viraj Ala, Soni identified his limited resources as a key driver for success. He explained that a lack of capital forced his team to focus on what truly mattered for their enterprise customers. He compared this experience to his college days playing Counter-Strike, where a lack of caution led to quick failure, contrasting this with his professional approach where he maintained absolute focus on the core mission.
Soni also reflected on the difficulty of scaling his team, which reached 150 employees before the acquisition. He admitted that he wished he had initiated necessary workforce reductions sooner. Despite the challenges, he remained committed to keeping an approachable management style, maintaining individual conversations with his staff as the business grew.
When asked about the quality that distinguishes top performers, Soni pointed to intellectual honesty. He emphasized that the willingness to bet on himself and his co-founders was essential to navigating market doubts. Ultimately, Soni viewed his constraints not as obstacles, but as the foundation of the clarity that led to the significant acquisition of his company.
