Singai G Ramachandran recently secured his appointment as the chairperson of the Tamil Nadu Startup and Innovation Mission, known as TANSIM. This move places the IIM Ahmedabad graduate at the helm of a state-backed agency tasked with driving entrepreneurship across Tamil Nadu. His appointment marks a shift in his professional trajectory, moving from the private sector and active politics to a government-linked leadership role. For most graduates of elite business schools, the path typically involves corporate placements and climbing ladders within established firms. Ramachandran broke that mold in 2015 when he opted out of the placement process entirely.
His academic foundation began long before his time at IIM Ahmedabad. Ramachandran attended PERKS Matriculation Higher Secondary School and pursued a diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at PSG Polytechnic College. He followed this with a degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering at PSG College of Technology. These early technical years provided a baseline for the digital-first career he would pursue later. During his master's program at IIM Ahmedabad, he held the position of General Secretary of the Students Affairs Council, which hinted at his interest in organizational leadership and public life rather than strictly traditional finance or consulting roles.
Entrepreneurship and Political Shifts
Before diving into political campaigns, Ramachandran explored the startup world as an owner. He launched Campus Cafe, which targeted a student demographic, and later co-founded an online bakery called Friend In Knead. These ventures taught him the practical realities of managing small businesses and navigating market entry. In 2017, he shifted his focus to media by founding The Social Media Company, a venture centered on video content and digital strategies. This background in content creation caught the eye of established political players in Tamil Nadu, leading him directly into the world of campaign management.
His political involvement deepened in 2016 when former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa selected him as State Secretary of the AIADMK IT Wing. Ramachandran spent the next several years building the party's digital presence and managing online communication channels. He later expanded his portfolio as the party’s Student Wing State Secretary. His public-facing career included a bid for office during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where he stood as a candidate for the Coimbatore constituency. This experience gave him direct insight into the political and social issues facing his home region, bridging the gap between digital strategy and ground-level governance.
Leading the Tamil Nadu Startup Mission
Recent shifts in his political allegiances have defined the latter half of 2026. After leaving the AIADMK in July 2026, he joined the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, a party founded by the actor-politician Vijay, in August. Now, as the leader of TANSIM, he oversees the government’s efforts to support early-stage ventures. This position requires a blend of technical understanding and political navigation, as the agency coordinates with various stakeholders to maintain the state’s position as a hub for technology and innovation.
His career shows a consistent interest in sectors where digital media intersects with grassroots reach. The TANSIM role allows him to apply his experience as a founder to the broader task of building an infrastructure for new companies. This appointment suggests the state government intends to lean on leaders who have navigated both the startup world and the complexities of public communication.
