Vikram Handa, Managing Director of Epsilon Carbon, turned a blank slate into a major force in the chemical and EV battery supply chain. Starting in 2010, Handa arrived in India with no prior manufacturing experience, having grown up in Abu Dhabi and studied in the United States. His initial focus on coal tar derivatives began with a difficult transition from a site in Maharashtra to a plant in Karnataka. During the early years, Handa faced significant hurdles, including regulatory delays and a plant that initially could not operate. This period forced him to pivot to contract manufacturing just to service debt and keep the operation alive. It taught him the critical importance of customer intimacy, leading him to visit aluminium smelters personally long before he had the capacity to supply them at scale.

Building a chemicals business from scratch requires a specific type of grit. Handa notes that his entry into the sector was not a calculated long-term strategy but rather a search for an industrial space where he could secure raw material access. By 2017, the company moved into a scaling phase, and Handa began to shift his management style. A pivotal moment occurred in 2019 after he attended a course at Harvard Business School. The experience forced him to disconnect from the daily grind and reflect on his role as a leader. Upon returning, he initiated a restructure of his team, focusing on building professional depth rather than relying on his own singular efforts to push the wagon. He realized that the business needed a robust IT backbone and a more cohesive HR structure to support the rapid growth he envisioned.

Pivoting to the Future of Energy

When Epsilon Carbon expanded into anode and graphite manufacturing, Handa was essentially betting on the future of electric vehicles before the market fully matured. He studied the Japanese value chain for years, gaining an understanding of Needlecook technology and the broader chemical processes required for battery materials. Despite the potential, he remained cautious. He chose to avoid joint ventures with Chinese firms to maintain his company's independent identity, which he viewed as a strategic advantage for targeting Western markets. This deliberate distancing from foreign dependency allowed Epsilon to position itself as a credible alternative for global battery manufacturers.

His approach to acquisitions also highlights his unconventional style. During a competitive bidding process for a cathode technology business, Handa didn't rely on extensive due diligence or complex corporate maneuvers. He met with executives in London, discussed his vision for the business, and famously finalized the deal by writing an offer on a napkin. This move reflected his deep understanding of LFP technology and his belief that the asset could be integrated into his existing operations. For Handa, the success of these bets relies heavily on identifying high-growth niches where his team can add value while maintaining a lean, operational focus. He continues to view the business through the lens of a builder, constantly scanning for new opportunities while ensuring the company’s capital allocation remains disciplined.

Sustaining Growth and Future Intentions

Maintaining the pace of growth requires a high level of personal and organizational discipline. Handa keeps a close watch on cash flow, which he identifies as the primary factor that keeps him alert. While he views his early years as an entrepreneur as the most stressful period due to a lack of visibility, he now manages risk by staying closely involved in project planning. He expects his senior hires to be thinkers who can challenge his ideas, often encouraging his team to tell him plainly when a proposal is flawed. This culture of open dissent is something he aims to cultivate further as the company expands.

Looking toward 2035, Handa plans to remain active in building new ventures while balancing his commitment to his family. He remains uninterested in service-oriented sectors like hospitality or retail, preferring the tangible, complex challenges of manufacturing. His journey from an aerospace startup in the UAE to a major player in India’s chemical landscape serves as a study in how to navigate failure, manage capital constraints, and effectively pivot when market conditions change.
