Analysis of AI Impact on Professional Labor

Lawyers currently occupy the top position on South Korea's list of professions most exposed to artificial intelligence. A report from the Korea Employment Information Service indicates that the technology’s capability to handle text-heavy and analytical tasks has placed legal experts at the forefront of this shift. The findings reflect data analyzed from 415 distinct occupations, drawing on a 2025 survey of workers and existing employment records.

Legal assistants, patent attorneys, biological science technicians, and accountants follow lawyers in the rankings for AI exposure. Journalists and other media professionals hold the 12th position on this list. High exposure scores in this context do not mean that these positions face immediate elimination. Instead, they demonstrate how closely the core duties of these roles align with existing and emerging AI capabilities. The study centers on technical tasks like quantitative data analysis and deep text interpretation.

Demographics and Exposure Levels

Workers in their 30s show the highest concentration in these exposed fields. Approximately 53.1 percent of these professionals work in jobs identified as having medium or high AI exposure. The research suggests that while exposure is high across many sectors, it remains concentrated in roles that rely heavily on information processing. This trend persists across the national employment insurance system, covering nearly 3 million workers.

Occupations with the lowest exposure scores rely on manual labor. Workers in production, construction, and specialized trade settings remain largely shielded from these AI shifts. This includes roles such as metal-coating machine operators, plasterers, rice cake makers, and meat-processing staff. Their daily output requires physical movement and on-site operation, tasks that current AI models cannot replicate effectively.

Employment Trends and Future Outlook

Despite the classification of high exposure for millions of jobs, evidence does not link generative AI to a broad, national slowdown in employment. The data indicates that employment declines in highly exposed fields began before the public release of ChatGPT in late 2022. Other factors, including a shrinking youth population and lower participation rates in the labor force, likely drive these changes.

Still, the report highlights a concern for younger workers. Employment among those under 30 in highly exposed jobs fell to an index of 86.6 in 2025, relative to a 2022 baseline of 100. By comparison, low-exposure occupations saw a decline to 92.5. This gap creates a risk where entry-level roles disappear, making it harder for new graduates to gain the necessary experience to advance in their careers.

The Korea Employment Information Service recommends the creation of specific AI competency indicators. These tools would allow job seekers to map their skills against current market needs, helping them find stable paths forward. As the labor market adjusts, the government continues to monitor how these technological tools reshape the daily work of professionals across the country.
