The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas has barred Phil Baniewicz from all future ecclesiastical employment, volunteer work, or ministerial roles. This decision follows a year-long independent investigation into 16 allegations of misconduct spanning from 1985 to 2025. Investigators conducted 68 interviews and reviewed records covering his time at Life Teen Inc, Maur Hill Mount Academy, and Bishop Miege High School.
The investigation report cited a persistent pattern of imprudent professional conduct and repeated failures to maintain appropriate boundaries with minors. While the findings did not meet the specific threshold for canonical disciplinary charges, the Archdiocese stated the behavior remains incompatible with the standards required for church leadership. Baniewicz was previously removed from his position as president of Bishop Miege High School in August 2025 following several months on administrative leave.
Archbishop Shawn McKnight emphasized that safeguarding minors is a primary responsibility for the church. The independent review firm analyzed historical reports regarding Baniewicz’s career, including his tenure as a youth minister in Mesa, Arizona. The Archdiocese offered Baniewicz opportunities to respond to these claims throughout the process, including through a formal interview and a written statement. Despite the conclusion of this internal review, Baniewicz has not faced criminal charges.
