Baton Rouge leads 360 U.S. metro areas in construction employment growth

Baton Rouge is now leading the nation in construction employment growth. Recent data from the Associated General Contractors shows that the region ranks first out of 360 metro areas in the United States for percentage increase in industry jobs. Between June 2025 and June 2026, the area added more than 10,000 positions, which brings the total number of construction workers to 57,400. This 22 percent increase demonstrates significant activity within the local labor market.

Beyond percentage gains, the region also holds a high national standing in terms of raw volume. Baton Rouge ranks third in the entire country for the actual number of new construction jobs created during this twelve-month period. Every metro area across Louisiana reported improvements in construction employment over the past year, reflecting a broad trend within the state.

Industry representatives recently gathered at the I-10 widening project site to highlight these figures and address the current landscape of public infrastructure. The group pointed to the importance of federal funding for ongoing developments. They warned that the current federal highway and transit law is set to expire at the end of September. Failure to pass a new bill on time creates uncertainty for future growth and the stability of projects that drive these employment numbers.
