Leadership Changes at Bluefield State
The Board of Governors at Bluefield State University officially ended the employment of President Darrin Martin on August 27, 2026. This decision followed a vote to withdraw the board's previous approval of Martin's contract, which had been set in place on July 14, 2026. The shift in leadership is effective immediately.
Board Chairman Charlie Cole stated that the action stemmed from information recently presented to the board regarding the university's fiscal stability and internal operations. The board highlighted the need for improved administrative oversight as a primary driver for the removal of the sitting president.
Appointment of Acting President
Cathy Deeb, the current Vice Chairwoman of the Board of Governors, is now acting president. Deeb has served on the board since 2017 and is a graduate of the university. She resides in Bluefield and manages a local property business, DCI Property Management. She has committed to serving in this role without compensation while the board searches for an interim leader.
Cole addressed potential concerns among students and staff by confirming that normal campus operations will continue. The board intends to maintain the current academic schedule, student services, and university activities without interruption during this period of transition.
Financial Review and Future Oversight
Beyond the leadership change, the board has authorized an independent accounting firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of the university’s financial records. The board asserts that it requires direct and unrestricted access to these documents to evaluate fiscal obligations and ensure accountability.
This move represents a significant effort to stabilize the financial position of the institution. Board leadership emphasized that protecting the interests of students, faculty, and the surrounding community is their priority. The review process is scheduled to begin immediately as the university attempts to address concerns regarding its fiscal health and administrative procedures. The board has not provided a specific timeline for when the next phase of its search for a permanent successor will commence.
