Florida daughter says HOA is trying to force her out of 55-plus community after inheriting home from dad

A 28-year-old Jacksonville resident is fighting to keep her home after the local homeowners association moved to sue her for living in a 55-plus community. Bethany Michel inherited the property from her father in 2023, yet the Arbor Mill HOA board is now attempting to force her out.

To fund this legal battle, the board approved a $1,000 special assessment fee for all 155 residents. Neighbors are now being asked to pay for the lawsuit against a community member, an action that has split local opinion. While some board members claim they are enforcing age restrictions, other residents expressed opposition to the move, questioning the decision to target a neighbor.

Michel moved to the area in 2020 to care for her father during his final years. She argues she should be allowed to remain in the house she legally inherited, noting that homeownership is difficult for her generation. The homeowner currently faces restricted access to amenities while the dispute continues in court. She remains in the home and stated that she plans to continue her fight to stay.
