Retirement Processing Time Jumps Even Amid Shift to Online Applications
The Office of Personnel Management reports that average retirement application processing times increased to 96 days in June. This jump occurred even as the agency shifts from paper applications to its digital portal. Data shows that paper applications take an average of 120 days to process, while digital filings sit at 66 days. These numbers are averages and do not account for individual cases that take significantly longer or the time spent at the agency level before reaching OPM.
OPM designated July 1 as the final day for paper submissions, with exceptions made only for specific confidentiality requirements. Officials intend for the Online Retirement Application portal to replace traditional filing methods. While the total inventory of pending applications dropped to 34,000 in June from a February peak of 65,000, the rising processing time remains a concern for employees transitioning into retirement.
Retirees often face financial hardship while waiting for full benefits to begin. This processing time only covers the period at OPM and excludes the initial duration applications spend in agency personnel or payroll offices. OPM has not provided specific commentary regarding the recent increase in processing duration. Employees currently planning their departure from federal service should account for these operational delays when mapping out their retirement finances.
