New Social Security COLA projections released for 2027 adjustment
Social Security recipients may see a modest increase in their monthly benefits for 2027. The Senior Citizens League recently released a new projection estimating a 3.8% Cost of Living Adjustment for the coming year. While this figure remains subject to change before the official announcement in October, it represents a slight shift from earlier forecasts.
Under this current projection, average monthly Social Security benefits would rise by nearly $74, bringing the typical payment to approximately $2,011. This estimate is based on the same federal metrics the Social Security Administration uses to calculate annual adjustments, though organizations like The Senior Citizens League argue that these standard measures do not accurately reflect the specific expenses faced by older Americans, such as rising costs for healthcare and housing.
There is ongoing discussion about how these adjustments are calculated. Some groups continue to advocate for a switch to the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly, which specifically tracks the spending habits of those 62 and older. While legislative efforts like the Social Security 2100 Act have been introduced to formalize this change and improve program longevity, many analysts view the prospects for such broad reform as unlikely in the near term.
Official numbers will not be finalized until the fall. For now, beneficiaries should anticipate a potential adjustment consistent with the current 3.8% projection, though factors like inflation rates over the next several months will determine the final outcome.
