Origins of the DTILE System
Industrial designers often focus on the point where two surfaces meet. In traditional construction, this intersection frequently becomes a weak link or an aesthetic failure. Three designers from the Netherlands—Arnout Visser, Erik Jan Kwakkel, and Peter van der Jagt—decided to address this issue by rethinking the physical properties of tiles. They developed a concept known as DTILE, a system designed to wrap around three-dimensional corners and edges rather than merely covering flat planes.
The initial design thinking for this project began in the 1990s. The trio wanted to move away from the limitations of rigid, square tiles that often leave gaps or require ugly metal trim at corners. By engineering specific curved and corner-specific pieces, they created a method to allow ceramic surfaces to maintain a continuous, fluid appearance across complex geometries. This approach effectively turns a tiled wall into a piece of sculpture, where the tiles follow the contours of the space itself.
Functionality Beyond the Surface
The DTILE system expands the utility of tiled surfaces by integrating functional components directly into the grid. Beyond just the corner and transition pieces, the catalog includes specialized utility tiles. These pieces allow for the direct installation of shelves, storage hooks, ventilation ports, electrical outlets, and even recessed drawer housings. Because these utility pieces match the dimensions and finish of the standard tiles, they integrate into the wall without disrupting the visual rhythm of the installation.
Designers using the system can effectively build furniture into the architecture of a room. For example, a kitchen counter can transition seamlessly into a sink or a wall, with the tiles wrapping around every edge and crevice. This removes the need for separate hardware attachments that often trap dirt or moisture in kitchens and bathrooms. The system essentially creates an encased, durable skin for interiors that remains easy to clean and maintain over years of heavy use.
Commercial Growth and Market Reach
After years of prototyping and refining the manufacturing process, the designers officially launched their brand in 2010. They chose to keep manufacturing in-house to maintain strict control over the quality and the complex tolerances required for the curved pieces to align properly. This decision provided them with the accuracy necessary to produce a system where every single component fits with its neighbor, regardless of the angle or shape of the underlying substrate.
Today, the DTILE product line reaches customers in over 50 countries. The adoption of this system marks a shift in how architects and interior designers approach small, irregular, or custom spaces. While standard tiles require cutting and compromise, this system provides a pre-engineered solution for complex architectural volumes. It represents a significant change in how industrial design principles apply to permanent building materials, proving that a high degree of technical precision can result in a cleaner, more adaptable living environment.
