A massive new monument to the Virgin Mary now stands in the small Polish village of Konotopie. At 55.6 meters tall, the statue reaches greater heights than the famous Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, making it the largest of its kind in Europe. Construction took 18 months and reached completion this August for the celebration of the assumption of Mary into heaven.
The project resulted from private funding by Roman and Grażyna Karkosik, a wealthy couple who reside nearby. Local officials expect the site to draw pilgrims to this rural area, which currently has a population of roughly 130 people. Access to the monument, including an observation deck on the pedestal, is free for the public.
Poland remains a country with strong Catholic roots, although religious participation has shifted in recent years. This new landmark follows the 2010 construction of the Jesus Christ the King of the Universe statue in Świebodzin, which was once the world's tallest of its kind until surpassed by a project in Indonesia in 2024.
Engineers faced unique challenges in manufacturing the custom mold required for the concrete structure, with much of the specialized work sourced from Italy. As tourism infrastructure begins to stir in the region, the long-term impact on the local village remains to be seen.
