Rethinking the Californian Bungalow
Studio Ceravolo recently completed the Maribyrnong I House, a major renovation of a traditional Californian bungalow. The project focuses on a significant addition that reorients the home toward natural light. Rather than adhering to the rigid floor plans common in older residential architecture, the design team prioritized the habits of a young family. The house now functions as a series of connected zones, centered around a large workshop and garage space that were non-negotiable requirements for the clients.
This addition occupies the rear of the lot, balancing the need for storage and workspace with the desire for a modern, open-concept living area. The new volume includes an open kitchen, living, and dining space under a single skillion roof. This roof form mirrors the pitch of the original structure to ensure a sense of continuity. By maintaining this visual link, the project bridges the gap between the historic street frontage and the new, contemporary rear addition.
Light and Materiality
Natural light defines the interior environment of the Maribyrnong I House. The design includes full-height glazing facing north to maximize solar gain. East and west-facing highlight windows bring in additional light throughout the morning and afternoon. To manage this influx, Studio Ceravolo integrated custom sheet metal brise soleil structures into the glazed facades. These elements serve a dual purpose by controlling glare and casting changing shadows across the living spaces.
Material choices focus on longevity and local character. Double brick walls provide a solid foundation for the new structure. Corrugated metal cladding, a common feature in Australian architecture, provides a familiar texture and simplified maintenance requirements. Every material selection serves the goal of creating a durable, sensory-driven home. The resulting interior feels quiet, allowing the shifting light and shadow to serve as the primary focus of the design.
Maximizing Space and Function
The floor plan incorporates a mezzanine level that overlooks the main living area. This choice allows the house to gain usable square footage without increasing the footprint of the ground floor. By lifting this space, the architects preserved more of the garden area, which was a priority for the homeowners. The mezzanine acts as a retreat while maintaining a visual connection to the kitchen and dining areas below.
This renovation demonstrates how standard residential typologies can be adapted to current needs. The project does not aim to replace the character of the original house but rather to extend it into a new, functional phase. Through careful placement of windows and deliberate use of materials, the architects created a home that changes as the sun moves across the sky.
