The Central Library in Spokane is hosting an event that highlights the history and practice of calligraphy. This program connects the public with rare books from the library vault and modern techniques used by local creators.
Author and illustrator Karyn Jeffrey will lead the session titled Illuminations: The Art of Calligraphy. She will present her recent work alongside historic manuscripts, offering attendees a view into how professional lettering has evolved over centuries. The event serves as a companion to the library’s current exhibit, which features contributions from the Spokane Calligraphy Guild.
Staff at the library noted that the collection includes items like the 1493 Nuremberg Chronicle. This volume contains early examples of woodcut illustrations and distinct lettering styles that reflect the printing techniques of that period. By showcasing these pieces, the library aims to demonstrate that beautiful handwriting remains a relevant art form in the modern digital age.
The presentation is scheduled for Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Visitors can also view the full calligraphy exhibit at the Central Library through August 30. This initiative highlights the ongoing effort to preserve historical craftsmanship while supporting local artists.
