Tunbridge Wells exhibition showcases Steve Read celebrity photos

Photographer Steve Read is offering a rare look at the 1990s celebrity landscape through a new exhibition in Tunbridge Wells. Titled Shooting Stars Pays the Rent, the collection currently occupies space at The Claremont pub and features candid portraits captured during his time working for magazines like Talk and Loaded.

Read spent much of his career in Los Angeles during a period he describes as a golden era for celebrity journalism. The exhibition includes notable figures such as JK Rowling, Sharon Osbourne, and Eminem, documenting them during pivotal moments in their careers. The collection provides a historical record of how fame and media coverage functioned before the digital shift.

Beyond standard portraiture, the display highlights Read's knack for staging distinct visual concepts. One standout piece captures actor Vinnie Jones standing waist-deep in a pool while wearing an expensive Armani suit and holding a cigar. This image stands as an example of the collaborative and often spontaneous nature of photo shoots from that decade.

Reflecting on his experiences, Read singles out former heavyweight boxer Lennox Lewis as the most pleasant subject he encountered. While the work captures the intensity of stars on the rise, Read notes that behind the scenes, personalities often differed from their public personas.
