Fairfax Co. students write book to help elementary kids learn about financial literacy

A team of students from Oakton High School in Fairfax County is teaching young children the basics of money management. Dev Rai, Austin Chen, and Ayush Ranjan identified a lack of early financial literacy resources and decided to create their own educational tool. Their book, titled The Seed That Grows, uses a simple metaphor to explain the long-term benefits of saving versus immediate gratification.

The project started as part of a DECA initiative. The authors wrote the text and designed the illustrations themselves. The book tells the story of two children who receive a seed. One child chooses to plant it for a future harvest, while the other trades it away for a piece of candy. This direct comparison teaches students to distinguish between near-term impulses and long-term goals.

The impact of their work has extended far beyond local classrooms. The group raised over $1,000 to print and distribute 274 copies across 12 Fairfax County elementary schools. With support from an advisor connected to the World Bank, translated versions have reached international schools in countries including India, China, Australia, and Kazakhstan. Surveys conducted during read-aloud sessions indicated a 74 percent increase in financial understanding among the children involved.

Looking ahead, the students are moving beyond print. They plan to convert the core concepts of their story into an interactive financial literacy game. By teaching these habits early, the authors hope to instill a sense of discipline that students will carry into adulthood. Their success demonstrates that even small initiatives can create measurable change when they address fundamental skill gaps.
