Google today launched Expert Intelligence, a new initiative that links specialized content from authors and publishers directly with its Gemini Notebook product. This system allows users to interact with books they have purchased via Google Play Books, turning static reading material into active research assistants. The feature functions by allowing users to add their owned ebooks to a Gemini Notebook. Once added, the software provides tools to query specific chapters, generate summary infographics, or create audio overviews of the content. Google built Expert Intelligence through direct partnerships with major publishing houses like Penguin Random House, Macmillan, and Johns Hopkins University Press. A user must own the digital copy on Google Play Books to access it within the interface. These public-facing resources include supplementary materials and curated artifacts that expand on the themes found within the original books. Authors such as Michael Pollan and Steven Pinker participated in this pilot phase. This approach aims to deepen reader engagement by offering an interactive layer that traditional digital text lacks. It also provides a method for writers to re-introduce their backlist to audiences in a format that encourages active, rather than passive, consumption of their ideas.

The current release focuses primarily on the integration within Gemini Notebook, but the architecture supports a wider rollout. Google executives indicate that Expert Intelligence will reach the core Gemini app and the AI Mode in Search within the coming months. The company also plans to expand the types of content available beyond books. Planned additions include third-party research subscriptions, academic textbooks, and high-level business reports.
