Greatest science books: Henrietta Lacks's descendant on her legacy - and Rebecca Skloot's book
Henrietta Lacks died in 1951 from an aggressive cervical cancer at age 31. She was a Black tobacco farmer from Virginia, but her story reached global importance long after her death. Without her knowledge or consent, doctors took samples of her tumor cells during her treatment. These cells, known as HeLa cells, demonstrated an unprecedented ability to reproduce in a laboratory setting.
HeLa cells became the first immortal human cell line in scientific history. They provided the foundation for massive medical progress over the following decades.
