Japanese novelist Keigo Higashino, renowned for his complex mystery narratives, has died at 68. His official account confirmed the author passed away from colorectal cancer on Thursday. A private funeral service has since taken place.
Higashino was a prolific writer who produced 106 books throughout his career. Readers worldwide recognize him for titles such as The Devotion of Suspect X, which earned him the Naoki Prize in 2006. His background as an engineer at Denso influenced his methodical approach to plot construction, resulting in stories that blended technical precision with deep character development.
His impact reached far beyond Japan. In countries like China, his translated works consistently topped bestseller lists. Colleagues and fans have expressed their grief online, citing the emotional depth and creativity he brought to the mystery genre. Tsuyoshi Sonoda of Kinokuniya bookstore remarked that Higashino’s work possessed an unexpected quality, often described as a form of poison that made his art stand out from standard literature.
Despite his commercial success, selling over 100 million books in Japan by 2023, Higashino generally avoided media attention. He preferred to let his writing define his public image. His final novel, titled Eternal Memory, is scheduled for release next month. He served as the president of the Mystery Writers of Japan for four years and maintained a consistent presence in the literary world for over four decades.
