The King County Library System has officially opened a massive new sorting facility in Renton, Washington. This 5.2 million dollar installation stands as the largest library materials sorter in North America. It handles the daily flow of 25,000 items that move across the 50 branches within the system.

The project marks the end of a three-year effort to replace an aging distribution center in Preston. Executive Director Heidi Daniel noted that the previous facility could no longer manage the demand from 700,000 active cardholders. In 2025 alone, those users checked out over 11 million physical items. The old equipment required constant maintenance and spare parts from online marketplaces, leading to the decision to modernize.

Operational efficiency is a major focus for the new site. The system uses two conveyor belts and robotic arms to destack return totes at a rate of one every 15 seconds. Human staff members scan each item individually, which then routes the material into one of 186 delivery chutes. At peak performance, the machine processes 8,000 items per hour. The facility operates with a dedicated team of 13 employees who manage the inflow and outgoing shipments.

Workplace safety and comfort received significant upgrades in the new warehouse. The old stacking process required employees to climb ladders to reach totes stacked 14 levels high. The new layout limits stacking to five levels, allowing workers to move materials with hand trucks. Additionally, the noise output dropped from 89 decibels to 67, matching the volume of a standard household vacuum cleaner.

Accuracy serves as the final core improvement. The previous sorter had a mis-sort rate of up to 2 percent, which often caused confusion for patrons expecting notifications about book availability. With automated tracking and improved destination support, the library expects fewer errors. Local officials emphasized that this project ultimately shortens wait times for residents across the region, ensuring that library materials reach their destinations with greater speed and reliability.
