Jill Lepore’s recent book, The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State, examines how Silicon Valley leaders like Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and Sam Altman interact with science fiction. These men grew up reading authors such as Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Robert Heinlein. While these books were written as cautionary tales regarding technology and societal collapse, these future billionaires read them as technical blueprints. This shift turned stories designed to highlight human flaws into a framework for building modern corporate agendas.

Lepore describes this phenomenon as a fundamental misreading. Instead of recognizing the warnings embedded in the text, these leaders fixated on the allure of advanced machinery and space travel. As Thiel stated in 2009, he directed his venture capital fund to prioritize what he called science-fiction-type investing. This preference for fantasy over cautionary substance has contributed to the current environment where the physical and human world is increasingly treated as an obstacle to be bypassed by code and data centers.

Historical Fantasies and Modern Policy

Musk frequently cites Asimov’s Foundation series as a formative influence. While the character Hari Seldon in those novels aimed to build institutions that could outlive him, Musk often reduces the story to a narrative of individual genius. Similarly, Musk interpreted Douglas Adams’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy as a lesson that phrasing the right question matters more than the answer, ignoring the satirical nature of the book’s central joke about the futility of seeking ultimate truths from computers.

This trend is not limited to Musk. Jeff Bezos showed a deep interest in Star Trek, even lobbying for a cameo in a film. However, his valedictorian speech at age 18 focused on orbital colonies and space hotels. While the original television series examined racism and the dangers of the Cold War, Bezos prioritized the extraterrestrial setting over the moral complexity the show presented. This pattern repeats across the industry: the aesthetic of a breakthrough is pursued while the underlying message about its dangers is disregarded.

The Technocratic Legacy

Altman has suggested that an AI president could effectively manage human preferences by understanding citizens at a granular level. This idea aligns with the 1955 Asimov story Franchise, which was meant to depict a dystopian reality where democracy is replaced by a machine. What was once intended to provoke horror is now frequently discussed as an efficient administrative solution. This ideology echoes early 20th-century Technocracy, a movement that sought to replace democratic processes with rule by engineers and scientists.

Joshua N. Haldeman, Musk’s grandfather, was a leader in the Technocracy movement and even adopted a numbered identifier to reflect a future where individuality was secondary to systemic efficiency. This belief in the necessity of planning for timescales of millions of years, often called Longtermism, mirrors the detachment found in many classic science fiction novels. The focus is shifted away from immediate human welfare toward a distant, machine-governed future.

Growing Into Adult Perspectives

Arrested development is a central theme in why these leaders struggle to view their source material with an adult lens. By fetishizing the technology without engaging with the humanistic concerns of authors like Asimov, they turn potential nightmares into reality. When Musk launched a Tesla Roadster into space, he included a copy of Foundation, illustrating a lack of irony that underscores his commitment to these childhood visions.

Still, some shifts in perspective appear possible. Bill Gates, also a fan of science fiction in his youth, has recently expressed concerns regarding the speed of AI development. Gates suggests that the grown-up lesson from writers like Heinlein is not to pursue every technological possibility, but to recognize that nothing is inevitable. If these industry leaders finally re-examine the stories that shaped their early lives, they might move away from the current path of unbridled technological acceleration.
