Ten-year-old San Francisco resident Mason Reeves is now an official contender in the Academy Awards race for best actress. Sumerian Pictures confirmed this week that they will submit the young performer for the lead actress category following her breakout role in the film "Josephine." The movie garnered significant attention at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where it secured both the grand jury prize and an audience award. This dual victory mirrors the trajectory of "CODA," which earned similar recognition in 2021 before claiming the Academy Award for best picture.
The film features a narrative rooted in the personal history of director Beth de Araújo. It follows the story of a girl who witnesses a violent crime in Golden Gate Park while running with her father, played by Channing Tatum. Gemma Chan portrays her mother. The plot centers on the girl's experience as a witness in a high-stakes legal trial. The themes are dark enough that Reeves was barred from watching the finished version of the film during its festival premiere.

Director Beth de Araújo scouted Reeves at the Clement Street Farmers Market in San Francisco. The young actress noted that her mother initially discouraged her acting pursuits. Despite those reservations, the encounter at the market led to a starring role in a project that is already dominating industry conversations. Reeves spoke about the experience on the red carpet at Sundance, describing the chance meeting as a moment where the universe answered her wish.
The studio is also submitting Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan for consideration in supporting categories. De Araújo is slated for potential nominations in the directing and original screenplay categories.
