Charleston's Danny McBride has a new gig, and it involves 'GI Joe'

Actor, comedian, and writer Danny McBride is taking on a new role. The Charleston resident is set to direct the next film in the G.I. Joe franchise for Paramount. McBride, known for his work on The Righteous Gemstones and Eastbound and Down, also wrote the script for the upcoming project.

McBride has long been a fan of the G.I. Joe brand. He recently mentioned on a podcast that he still owns the original toys from his childhood. This project serves as his directorial debut for a feature film. It follows his previous experience as a writer and producer for the Halloween trilogy.

The production is the first installment for the franchise under the combined Paramount Skydance entity. This follows the 2025 merger between the two media companies. The studio looks to improve upon the performance of the 2021 film Snake Eyes, which struggled at the global box office.

Filming is expected to begin in 2027. Reports indicate that McBride aims to cast familiar faces from his professional network for the roles. McBride co-founded the creative company Rough House Pictures, which operates out of Charleston, and he continues to maintain a strong presence in the local arts scene.
