Korea Box Office Update
Christopher Nolan’s new film The Odyssey continues its dominant run at the South Korea box office. During the weekend of Aug. 21–23, the production secured $10.6 million. This figure comes from 1,321,204 individual ticket sales across 2,182 screens. The movie held 66.3% of the total market share. It shows strong staying power three weeks after its Aug. 5 release date. The film has earned $56.8 million in local ticket sales from over 7.1 million total viewers to date.
Competitors and Market Performance
Spider-Man: Brand New Day occupied the second spot during its fourth weekend. The superhero film brought in $2.9 million from 386,754 admissions. This brings its total haul in South Korea to $61.4 million. The film accounted for roughly 18.4% of market business. Insidious: Out of the Further debuted in third place this weekend. The horror sequel opened on Aug. 20 and earned $547,555 from 71,592 admissions. Local animated title Teenieping: Legend of the Whale Heartstone remained in the top five. It landed in fourth place with $480,487 in weekend revenue. The musical fantasy directed by Kim Soo-hoon has reached $5.3 million since its early August debut.
Mid-Tier Performers and Market Context
Detective Conan the Movie: Fallen Angel of the Highway claimed fifth place in its second weekend of release. The film pulled in $380,240 from 50,053 admissions. It has currently hit a cumulative total of $2.5 million. The local action-comedy Ok! Madam: Bon Voyage finished in sixth place. It generated $239,231 from 33,585 admissions. Star Uhm Jung-hwa leads the cast of this production, which has earned $2 million since release. Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie secured seventh place with $143,937. It brought its total gross to $671,567.
Sci-fi thriller Hope sat in eighth place for the weekend. The Na Hong-jin project starring Hwang Jung-min and Zo In-sung added $130,477 to its ledger. Its total gross now stands at $35 million with over 4.5 million tickets sold. A re-release of Studio Ghibli’s 2010 film The Secret World of Arrietty reached ninth place. The total market gross for the weekend was $16.1 million, a decrease from the previous week’s $22.3 million result.
