The depiction of a bunker in the film draws from a 2016 New Yorker profile. In that interview, Altman described his personal collection of items, including gas masks, antibiotics, and gold. He also mentioned a large property in Big Sur. Since then, the CEO has sought to clarify these remarks. He told the Wall Street Journal in 2023 that his preparations involved reinforced basements rather than bunkers.
Public tension regarding this definition resurfaced in 2025. During a podcast interview, comedian Theo Von questioned the technical distinction between a bunker and a reinforced basement. The conversation prompted a test of the product itself. The OpenAI chatbot provided a response stating that the described structure fit the definition of a bunker. Artificial arrived on the screen only after a period of uncertainty. Amazon MGM Studios originally held the rights to the film. The studio dropped the project in June, three months after confirming a 50 billion dollar investment in OpenAI. NEON picked up the distribution rights shortly after the separation. This transition mirrors the fast-paced nature of the industry events depicted in the script.
Andrew Garfield returns to the genre of tech-focused drama with this performance. He previously played Eduardo Saverin in the 2010 film The Social Network. That movie explored the origins of Facebook under Mark Zuckerberg. The subject of the new film remains a central figure in current artificial intelligence development. The release schedule includes a limited debut in late December followed by a wider theatrical expansion in January.
