Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to dominate the domestic box office in its third weekend of release. The Sony Pictures film earned an additional $70 million in North American theaters, bringing its total domestic haul to $785.8 million. This performance secures its position as the fourth-biggest domestic release in history and pushes its global total past $2 billion. It is only the eighth film ever to reach this financial landmark and the second-fastest to do so, trailing only Avengers: Endgame.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey maintained the second-place spot with $23.2 million in ticket sales. The film has now earned over $1.2 billion worldwide, bolstered by its recent expansion into Chinese markets. These two high-performing films successfully held off competition from several new releases over the weekend.
The battle for third place featured a clash between two dinosaur-themed films. The End of Oak Street, a PG-13 drama starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, narrowly edged out Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie. The End of Oak Street earned $21 million in its opening weekend, while the animated film brought in $20.5 million. The End of Oak Street, directed by David Robert Mitchell, has earned $47 million globally against its $80 million production budget.
Rounding out the top five, the documentary Katseye: Wild Hearts earned $4 million from a limited release on 724 screens. Other new entries like Six: The Musical Live and The Brink of War also managed to secure positions within the top 10 rankings. The Rivals of Amziah King, starring Matthew McConaughey, opened outside the top 10 with $1 million from 632 theaters.
The summer movie season has concluded with more than $4.2 billion in total ticket sales. This figure represents a 5.7 percent increase over the summer of 2019. Industry analysts note that while the total falls slightly short of the 2013 record, this summer is on track to rank among the top five highest-grossing seasons of all time.
