In the story, Jean Grey appears as a telepathic antagonist, causing widespread destruction and creating a complex conflict for Peter. This portrayal marks a sharp departure from traditional depictions, leading to significant audience discussion about the logic behind her initial villainous actions.
Sommers noted that to create a believable obstacle for a hero, the antagonist must possess physical, emotional, and mental weight. If the stakes do not feel authentic, the audience will not invest in the conflict. The writers chose to keep Jean's identity a mystery throughout much of the film to align the audience's perspective with that of Peter Parker, forcing viewers to react in real time rather than staying ahead of the protagonist.
While the movie concludes with a shift in their relationship, Sadie Sink is expected to return to the role in future projects within the X-Men franchise.
