‘The Odyssey’ is Christopher Nolan’s biggest-ever global opening with $264.1-million debut
Christopher Nolan’s latest film The Odyssey arrived in theaters this weekend with a massive $264.1 million global opening. This performance marks the director’s biggest debut ever, providing a significant boost to the summer box office after several quiet weeks.
The film brought in $124.5 million in the U.S. and Canada, beating initial studio projections of $117 million. It now stands as the third-highest domestic opening of 2026, trailing only Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas for their production company Syncopy, the movie was shot entirely on Imax cameras. The project required intense technical coordination to adapt camera technology for a full feature-length production, including the use of quieter and lighter equipment.
Audiences showed a clear preference for premium formats. Imax showings accounted for 23.8% of the weekend’s domestic revenue, and total enhanced format screenings made up more than half of the box office take. The director also leaned on practical effects, including animatronics and authentic sailing vessels, to create the visual experience.
The successful weekend offers theater owners relief following recent underperforming releases. While summer ticket sales remain below 2019 levels, the strong performance of The Odyssey indicates a solid appetite for large-scale cinematic events.
