Dave Kendall, the influential British VJ who defined the alternative rock era for a generation of music fans, has died at age 68. As the creator and host of MTV’s 120 Minutes from 1988 to 1991, Kendall provided a vital platform for bands that were often ignored by mainstream radio. He famously premiered the video for Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, helping bring underground sounds into millions of living rooms.

Before his television career, Kendall established himself as a journalist and editor for publications like Melody Maker and Spin. His move from England to New York served as the catalyst for his tenure at MTV, where he functioned as a writer, producer, and presenter. His work on 120 Minutes established a blueprint for music curation that prioritized authentic connections between artists and their audience.

Following his departure from MTV, Kendall remained active in the industry. He hosted the talk show Music Scoupe, anchored the Woodstock 94 pay-per-view, and contributed to international concert broadcasts. His career eventually took him to Thailand, where he hosted the travel show Destination Thailand and worked as a writer for the Bangkok Post.
