The track draws its title from a character in Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale. In the text, Serena Joy represents a key figure within the totalitarian patriarchy of Gilead. The character, brought to life on screen by Yvonne Strahovski in the Hulu adaptation, initially upholds the regime before experiencing a shift in her convictions. She eventually aligns with the protagonist to challenge the established leadership structure.
This lyrical direction marks a departure for Rodrigo. Her previous work on her album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love focused on the specific mechanics of romantic fallout. Serena Joy shifts the scope outward. She addresses themes of societal ignorance and human complicity in the face of oppressive systems.

The song opens with a pointed observation: Yeah it’s all for the cause, for the good of us all, and if you close your eyes, then it can’t be your fault. These lines highlight the tension between individual responsibility and the collective passivity that allows extremist policies to persist.
