Sony Music Publishing claimed the Publisher of the Year title at the 2026 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards. The event took place on August 26 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, California. This win marks the second consecutive year the publisher has received the honor from the organization.
Performance Metrics and Industry Recognition
The publisher earned the award by representing 27 of the most-performed R&B and hip-hop songs in the BMI repertoire during the past awards year. This figure shows growth from the 23 songs credited to the firm at the previous ceremony. The company remains under the leadership of Chairman and CEO Jon Platt, who has overseen a consistent run of performance awards for the publisher across various genres.
Ari Gelaw, the firm's Senior Vice President of Creative A&R, noted that the win belongs to the songwriters who produce the music. The firm's representatives accepted the trophy alongside BMI executives including Todd Horvath and Catherine Brewton. This win follows a successful season where the company was also named Pop Publisher of the Year at the 2026 BMI Pop Music Awards in May and Publisher of the Year at the 2026 ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards in June.
Key Tracks and Artist Success
Notable tracks contributing to the win include The Weeknd and Playboi Carti's "Timeless" and Tyler, the Creator's "Like Him." Justin Bieber's "Yukon" and Rod Wave and Tems' "25" also factored into the total count. The R&B/Hip-Hop Song of the Year, "luther" by Kendrick Lamar and SZA, involved several writers signed to the publisher, including Mark “Sounwave” Spears, Matthew “MTech” Bernard, Atia “INK” Boggs, and Sam Dew.
Kendrick Lamar took home the BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter of the Year award. His output included six of the year’s most-performed songs, such as "30 For 30" and "hey now." His collaborator SZA also shared in the recognition for the song "luther," which spent 23 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. This performance eclipsed a record previously held by Lamar's own track, "Not Like Us."
Honoring Industry Contributions and Producers
Beyond songwriting, the ceremony recognized producers. O Lil Angel received the R&B/Hip-Hop Producer of the Year award for his recent work with Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR. Other top producers included Jahaan Sweet, who is signed to Sony Music Publishing, alongside Dernst “D’Mile” Emile II and FNZ members Michael “Finatik” Mulé and Isaac “Zac” De Boni. The event also served as a moment of remembrance for songwriter Tay Keith, who passed away on June 18 at 29 years old. His family accepted his 2025 Songwriter of the Year award onstage.
Nas received the BMI Icon Award, with Babyface presenting the honor. The legendary rapper reflected on his early career, noting that he saw the BMI logo on vinyl records before he ever thought he would become a partner with the organization. This recognition highlights the ongoing influence of legacy artists within the current awards structure. The industry continues to watch how these publishers balance the needs of established icons with the development of emerging writers in a high-volume market.
