A multi-day court hearing in Dallas is currently examining the role of rap lyrics as evidence in a murder-for-hire trial. The case involves rapper Yella Beezy, who faces accusations related to the 2020 death of rival rapper MO3.
Prosecutors argue that these lyrics serve as proof of a bounty placed on the victim. Detective Eric Barnes testified that investigators monitored social media and music videos to track the feud because witnesses were reluctant to provide statements to law enforcement. According to the detective, the situation was monetized through tracks and worsened by public posts.
The defense team challenges the use of artistic work in a criminal courtroom. They brought in an expert witness to argue that these performers are often projecting a stage persona. The defense maintains that lyrics should not be treated as literal accounts of real-world criminal actions.
The court will reconvene on Tuesday to continue the pre-trial proceedings. This session precedes the formal murder-for-hire trial, which is currently scheduled to begin next month.
