Oprah Winfrey is distancing herself from former talk show collaborators Dr. Phil McGraw and Dr. Mehmet Oz. In a recent interview with Emmy magazine, the media mogul stated that the political paths chosen by both men are independent of her own actions. She noted that their careers took a turn toward the political right and into the orbit of President Trump, which has led to public criticism directed at her.
During her tenure on television, Winfrey played a significant role in launching both careers. She provided Dr. Phil with a platform after he assisted her during a 1998 legal trial, viewing him as a practical and down-to-earth expert. Harpo Productions eventually spun off his program, which became a leading show in daytime television. She also introduced Dr. Oz to her audience after a recommendation from Gayle King, highlighting his ability to explain medical topics clearly.
Winfrey maintains that her original intentions were rooted in the belief that they possessed information of value to viewers. She emphasized that she is no longer responsible for their individual choices or public stances. Despite her own history of supporting Democratic candidates, including Barack Obama and Kamala Harris, she asserts that the later political trajectories of McGraw and Oz are separate from her own influence.
Dr. Phil has become a prominent supporter of President Trump in recent years, participating in campaign rallies and border enforcement operations. Dr. Oz pursued a political career of his own, running for the US Senate in 2022 with Trump’s endorsement. He currently serves as the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services within the Trump administration. Winfrey continues to define her public life and political participation outside of the work she once performed with these former television figures.
