A Traumatic Incident During Production
Stavros Floros, a 22-year-old contestant on the reality television program Survivor Greece, has initiated a $100 million lawsuit against the show following a horrific accident in the Dominican Republic. During a segment filmed in May, Floros was spearfishing in open ocean waters to supplement the minimal food rations provided by the production team. While he was in the water, a vessel carrying approximately 20 tourists moved into the area. The boat’s propellers struck Floros, resulting in the total amputation of his left leg and severe injuries to his right leg.
Fellow contestant Emmanouil Malliaros attempted to shout a warning when the vessel approached, but the time to move was insufficient. The lawsuit claims the left leg was never recovered from the water. Floros was subsequently transported to Miami, Florida, for emergency medical treatment. He remained in a hospital for 61 days, undergoing multiple surgeries to address the trauma to both limbs. This event remains one of the most severe injuries in reality television history.
Allegations of Gross Negligence
The legal filing outlines a series of failures regarding safety standards on the production set. According to the lawsuit, contestants were required to spearfish in locations known for high commercial and tourist boat traffic. The production staff reportedly failed to establish roped-off or buoyed areas to keep contestants separated from local watercraft. No safety boats or spotters were assigned to monitor the divers, leaving them without any protection in the water.
Because production confiscated their phones, contestants had no way to call for help independently when the situation turned dangerous. The lawsuit argues that the producers knew, or should have known, of the risks inherent in the location. Instead of taking protective measures, the show allegedly treated the dangerous conditions as part of the competition. The legal team for Floros asserts that the duty of care owed to cast members was violated in this case.
Aftermath and Ongoing Litigation
Following the incident, the show did not cease operations. The lawsuit alleges that filming continued, with producers maintaining full control over the remaining cast members. The filing makes a further accusation that the production team provided cocaine and marijuana to the remaining contestants to manage the shock and stress caused by the accident. This detail highlights the alleged culture of negligence surrounding the set.
AcunMedya, the production company, has previously stated that Floros was diving without a surface marker buoy. The company claimed in a statement shortly after the May accident that the port authorities launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the collision. They maintained that a response team provided assistance immediately. The lawsuit demands compensatory and punitive damages for medical expenses and the permanent loss of capacity for enjoyment of life. Both AcunMedya and Skai TV have yet to provide detailed responses to the current allegations as the case proceeds through the court system.
