Study Finds Short Exercise Bouts Outperform Napping for Sleep-Deprived Adults
A recent study conducted by researchers at McGill University indicates that 20 minutes of physical activity is as effective as a 90-minute nap for counteracting the cognitive impact of sleep deprivation. The trial, which involved 54 healthy young adults, required participants to remain awake for 30 consecutive hours under controlled laboratory conditions to simulate extreme fatigue.
Following this period of extended wakefulness, subjects were split into three distinct groups. One group engaged in a 20-minute cycling session, while another was permitted a 90-minute nap. The third group served as a control and received no intervention. All participants were then tested on their memory retention using a series of images, which they recalled three days later.
The findings, published in late August 2026, reveal that physical exercise offers a viable alternative to napping when immediate rest is impossible. The researchers found that the exercise group performed just as well as the group that took a 90-minute nap. Both interventions proved superior to the control group, which lagged behind by 22 percent on memory tests.
Contrasting Mechanisms for Brain Recovery
While both exercise and napping yield positive results for cognitive function, the researchers noted that these methods impact the brain through different mechanisms. Napping appears to provide a restorative effect, allowing the brain to recharge and better absorb new information. Conversely, physical activity allows the brain to manage its remaining energy more efficiently, helping maintain sharpness despite a lack of sleep.
These distinctions provide clear options for individuals operating under tight schedules. Madhura Lotlikar, a doctoral candidate at the university and co-author of the study, emphasized that napping is not always practical in a professional or shift-work setting. According to Lotlikar, exercise is accessible and inexpensive to implement for those needing to stay alert.
Practical Applications for Workplace Fatigue
Short naps between 30 and 60 minutes did not show the same restorative benefits as a full 90-minute cycle, according to the researchers. This suggests that if a long nap is unavailable, short-duration exercise is a superior choice. The study highlights that while physical movement cannot replace high-quality sleep, it serves as a powerful stopgap measure for individuals who are otherwise unable to access extended rest.
The research holds significance for workplace policy, particularly in sectors prone to high fatigue levels. The team suggests that integrating short bursts of physical activity into daily schedules could mitigate the cognitive impairment often associated with sleep loss. Professor Marc Roig, who co-authored the report, noted that sleep deprivation affects nearly every facet of human function.
