The Marine Corps has confirmed the identity of the recruit who died following a medical emergency during training. Pvt. Aiden Gregory Craig, an 18-year-old resident of Murphy and a recent graduate of Wylie High School, passed away on August 5 at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, California.
The medical emergency occurred on August 1 during a routine physical fitness evaluation at Camp Pendleton. At the time of the incident, Craig was on his 47th day of recruit training as part of Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion. Marine officials are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and conducting a medical review per standard protocol.
During his time in the hospital, Craig was presented with the Eagle, Globe and Anchor emblem, a symbol awarded to those who earn the title of United States Marine. His father, Brent, placed the emblem in his son’s hand while a first sergeant recited the traditional rites typically reserved for the conclusion of recruit training.
Craig was a standout student and athlete who played defensive end for the Wylie Pirates. He earned varsity letters in football and track during his high school years. Family members describe him as a dependable and humble individual who felt drawn to the service by the camaraderie and discipline he experienced through sports.
A public visitation is set for August 21 at the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, with a candlelight vigil to follow at the Wylie ISD Stadium. A funeral service will take place on August 22 at Cottonwood Creek Church in Allen, where he will be laid to rest with full military honors. The family is also establishing an educational endowment through the Wylie ISD Education Foundation to honor his memory.
