Costco is moving into the healthcare market. The retailer announced a new partnership with SCAN Health Plan to offer Medicare Advantage coverage to its members. This move marks the first time Costco has collaborated with an insurance provider for such a program.
Under this arrangement, Costco members will gain access to Medicare Advantage plans that include benefits tied to Costco pharmacies, optical centers, and hearing services. SCAN Group, a large nonprofit Medicare Advantage provider, developed these plans specifically to address the needs of older adults and seniors. The program is currently active in states including California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, New Mexico, and Washington.
Federal approval for the rollout is pending, but the companies intend to sell these plans in stores, online, and through insurance agents once cleared. The plans are not tied to active Costco memberships, meaning they are accessible to a wider demographic of seniors regardless of their warehouse status. Both companies state the goal is to create a more integrated and reliable healthcare experience for the aging population.
Costco CEO Ron Vachris noted that the company has focused on providing value to members for over four decades. He described this entry into the Medicare Advantage space as a logical step in expanding their health service offerings. SCAN Group CEO Dr. Sachin H. Jain emphasized that the partnership relies on the existing trust people place in both organizations to deliver consistent quality and service.
The initiative signals a shift for the retailer as it looks for ways to expand its reach beyond traditional consumer goods. By connecting Medicare benefits directly to the physical and digital infrastructure of their warehouse locations, the companies aim to make healthcare navigation easier for seniors. The move sets the stage for how large retail entities might interact with federal health programs in the future.
