A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine reveals that flight attendants and pilots face the highest risk of radiation-related cancer among more than 500 professions analyzed. Researchers examined death certificate data for 12.7 million people between 2020 and 2024 to identify clear patterns in occupational health. While most people assume nuclear medicine workers face the greatest danger, the data points to the sky.

The culprit is cosmic radiation. Earth's atmosphere provides protection at ground level, but this shield thins at commercial flight altitudes. Aircrews are exposed to significantly higher levels of ionizing radiation than those working in medical facilities or industrial sectors. The research indicates that flight attendants are 50 percent more likely to experience radiation-related cancer than other groups, while pilots show a 36 percent higher likelihood.

It is important to note that this specific risk profile applies to radiation-linked cancers such as breast, thyroid, and prostate cancers, as well as leukemia and melanoma. When researchers looked at non-radiation-related cancers, flight crew outcomes remained near the median for all occupations. This suggests that the environment of the job itself creates a unique risk factor rather than general lifestyle or socioeconomic variables.

Despite these findings, the United States lacks formal federal dose limits or monitoring requirements for aircrew. Lead researcher Vishal Patel from Harvard Medical School emphasizes that current protections do not match the levels of exposure flight crews encounter during their careers. The authors suggest that routine health monitoring, including annual skin checks and specialized screenings, could help mitigate these risks.

The findings prompt a conversation about whether existing air travel safety standards need an update. As the aviation industry continues to grow, protecting the workforce from known environmental hazards remains a priority for long-term health.
