Novo Nordisk CEO Mike Doustdar says the market for weight-loss drugs remains in its early stages. Despite the rapid growth of medications like Wegovy, he estimates that only 10 to 15 percent of the 100 million Americans currently suffering from obesity have accessed GLP-1 treatments.

During a recent appearance on Mornings with Maria, Doustdar explained that the company sees a long runway for expansion. He noted that wider adoption of these drugs could provide significant economic relief. By reducing the overall health burden related to obesity, he expects the country to see a decrease in total healthcare spending.

Doustdar also emphasized the potential for improved productivity. He argued that as more people reach a healthier weight, they are better equipped to return to the workforce or increase their contributions. The CEO drew comparisons to his company’s insulin business, where dosages are often adjusted based on body mass, to illustrate how body size impacts medical needs.

As interest in GLP-1 drugs persists, Novo Nordisk continues to focus on both drug availability and the long-term economic arguments for their use. The conversation highlights how pharmaceutical leaders are framing these treatments not just as weight-loss tools, but as essential components of future public health and economic strategy.
