Trump administration halts $1 billion in Medicaid payments to California and Minnesota as part of fraud crackdown
The Trump administration has paused over $1 billion in Medicaid payments to California and Minnesota. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced the move this week as part of an effort to crack down on fraud within federal programs. This decision affects $867.5 million in California and $199 million in Minnesota.
According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the payment pause follows reviews that identified claims needing further documentation before federal matching funds proceed. In California, officials noted spending growth in in-home care programs that significantly outpaced national averages. For Minnesota, regulators flagged 14 service areas that require additional verification to meet federal standards.
Administration officials emphasized that these funds are not being cut permanently. States retain the ability to provide documentation to justify these claims. CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz stated that this marks a change in strategy, aiming to verify the legitimacy of claims before funds are distributed rather than attempting to recover misused taxpayer dollars after the fact.
This action follows the creation of an anti-fraud task force earlier this year. The task force is currently investigating potential abuses in federal programs across multiple states. Previous investigations in California have targeted hospice fraud, while Minnesota has faced scrutiny regarding pandemic-era funding schemes. Federal prosecutors in Minnesota have previously estimated that fraud in the state could total more than $1 billion.
Accountability remains the stated priority for the current administration regarding public assistance programs. Secretary Kennedy stated that Medicaid is intended to support vulnerable Americans rather than bankroll unsupported or suspicious claims. State officials in California and Minnesota now face the task of clearing these high-risk designations to restore the flow of federal matching dollars.
