Nearly 800 employees cut from one of GA's largest healthcare system

Wellstar Health System is reducing its workforce by 761 positions across Georgia. The layoffs, announced July 29, 2026, target corporate offices, support services, and administrative staff. This reduction represents approximately 2% of the organization's total staff of 35,000.

According to a statement from the company, the cuts result from an internal review of shared service functions. Leadership confirmed that direct patient-care roles, including doctors and nurses, remain unaffected by this action. The non-profit organization maintains operations across 11 hospitals, 5 health parks, and 300 medical offices throughout the state.

This personnel change arrives shortly after a recent analysis by WalletHub placed Georgia 49th in the nation for healthcare quality and access. The study evaluated states based on metrics like insurance premiums, patient outcomes, and provider availability. Only Mississippi and Alaska ranked lower in the report, highlighting ongoing challenges within the regional healthcare market.

Wellstar stated that its mission remains the same despite the corporate restructuring. The company emphasizes that patients should expect the same standard of care at their facilities as before the layoffs. The organization continues to serve a wide footprint in the Atlanta metro area and beyond.
