Lilly's triple agonist, retatrutide, successful in two additional Phase 3 obesity trials, delivering significant improvements in weight and A1C
Eli Lilly and Company announced positive results from two Phase 3 clinical trials for its investigational drug, retatrutide. The TRIUMPH-2 and TRIUMPH-3 studies evaluated the drug in adults with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and established cardiovascular disease over an 80-week period. The results show significant weight reduction and improvements in key health metrics for patients across various test groups.
In the TRIUMPH-2 trial, which focused on participants with obesity and type 2 diabetes, those on the highest dose of retatrutide lost an average of 49.6 pounds. This represents a 20.8 percent reduction in body weight. Patients also saw A1C levels drop, indicating better glycemic control throughout the duration of the study. These findings highlight the potential of the triple hormone receptor agonist to address multiple health complications simultaneously.
Participants in the TRIUMPH-3 trial, who lived with severe obesity and established cardiovascular disease, saw similar results. At the 80-week mark, those on the highest dose lost an average of 55.8 pounds, or 22.6 percent of their body weight. The study also recorded reductions in triglycerides, non-HDL cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure, pointing to broader cardiovascular benefits beyond simple weight loss.
Lilly reports that the most common side effects included gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, diarrhea, and constipation, which were generally mild to moderate in nature. The company is currently completing the necessary manufacturing and controls data package for the drug. They plan to submit a Biologics License Application to the FDA in the first quarter of 2027.
This data set completes the clinical requirements for global submissions regarding obesity, knee osteoarthritis pain, and obstructive sleep apnea. Regulators will now review these findings to determine the future of the treatment. The company remains focused on addressing these major health challenges through ongoing research and development efforts.
