Biotech company Enveda just released initial safety results for ENV-308, an experimental pill designed to mimic the chemical signals produced by intense physical exercise. The drug targets Lac-Phe, a hormone identified by Stanford researchers in 2022 that helps suppress appetite after a hard workout. Because natural Lac-Phe clears the body quickly, it has never been a viable medical treatment until this new formulation.
The development addresses a major issue in current weight management. Millions of adults use GLP-1 medications, but most patients stop within a year, often leading to rapid weight regain. Medical professionals worry that this cycle of weight fluctuation causes long-term metabolic and heart health risks. ENV-308 aims to help patients sustain their health gains after transitioning off GLP-1 therapy.
In a Phase 1 trial involving 88 healthy volunteers, the drug demonstrated a favorable safety profile. Unlike many current weight-loss treatments, participants reported no serious gastrointestinal issues, which are frequent causes for discontinuation in other drugs. Researchers also observed a drop in circulating leptin levels, indicating that the drug impacts the body's internal energy-sensing systems.
While this study focused on safety rather than weight loss, upcoming Phase 2 trials will test the drug's effectiveness in people who have finished or are ending GLP-1 treatments. Animal research suggests the pill may prevent muscle loss, a side effect often associated with other rapid weight-loss methods. If successful, ENV-308 could offer a way to keep weight off without the repetitive cycle of loss and regain.
Enveda expects to shift focus toward human efficacy testing soon. The company views the pill not as a replacement for exercise, but as a mechanism to support metabolic stability. For many patients, maintaining long-term health remains a difficult hurdle, and this approach provides a potential tool to anchor those results over time.
